Perfect auto feeder for feeding your pheasants. These treadle feeders are identical in size to the Appletons Bantam Step On Feeder except for the depth of the feeder box. The feeder box is shallow and this makes all the difference when feeding birds like pheasant. The pheasants do not need to reach all the way in so can peck at their feed easier making it a more suitable feeder for them. The huge advantage of using these feeders is the reduction in vermin. We had issues with rats, mice and sparrows in our pheasant flights and since the introduction of these feeders what a difference it has made. Here at Appletons we use these auto feeders to feed our Chinese Golden Pheasant and our Lady Amherst Pheasants. This unit holds app. 1kg of feed. Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens! We feed out Weston Layer pellets to our laying birds and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for eggs production with sound shells. However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free-range we provide shell grit separately. Shell grit has 3 benefits over the soluble limestone they add in the feed. The hard shell bits act as teeth in the gizzard to assist in grinding up the feed and aids digestion. The intake of calcium from the shells helps strengthen the shell of the chicken eggs. Plus trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet At Appletons we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with some weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out! Available in a 2kg or a 5kg bag.

Reap the benefits of using untreated wood shavings. Also ideal for raising chicks and in nest boxes. We recommend the use of wood shavings in a deep litter bed system. Shavings are better than wood chip or sawdust as shavings offer nice curls of timber rather than dust or chips. Deep litter is a term used to describe the floor of a chook house where loose dry material (wood shavings) are used. If mixed with chicken manure and additional dry litter as required, deep litter will not need removing for 6 to 12 months. If looked after, deep litter has no smell and ends up as beautiful compost (with no added weeds!) We do not recommend the use of hay or straw in a deep bed litter system. Essential for hatching and rearing day old chicks. Chick Mat is essential if you are hatching in incubators or raising chicks in brooder boxes. We use chick mat in our brooder boxes for the first 3 to 5 days. It helps prevent splays and gives the day-olds a firm surface to grip.
