These nasty bugs don’t live on your chickens but hide in the framework of your coop, perches and nest boxes, only coming out at night to feed on the blood of your birds. The result is they become stressed, suffering anaemia, reducing egg production and even death if not treated. Red mites are also very difficult to control, so Appletons have developed Poultry Safeguard which dissolves mites on contact. It’s also a powerful disinfectant, killing bacteria, viruses and odour in coops.Appletons Poultry Safeguard is New Zealand made and best of all it is very economical. It is a concentrate which you mix with water as you need it - you get approximately 64 litres of maintenance solution from our 1-litre containers and as a mite treatment approximately 20 litres, and that makes it a lot more cost-effective when compared to other similar available products.Poultry Safeguard is a blend of high foaming surfactants, sequestrates and alkaline builders and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) which effectively dissolves waxy accumulations and is effective against a range of microbes (including Avian Influenza Virus, Avian Infectious Bronchitis and Newcastle’s disease) and micro-organisms including bacteria, mildew, moulds and fungi. For long-lasting residual control of red mite and other external parasites in poultry housing. Dust on perches and in nesting areas in poultry houses. The mites will crawl through the powder to get to the birds. The powder scratches the red mites waxy outer covering of their exoskeletons causing them to slowly dehydrate and die. This product is 100% natural, DE based and can be used safely in organic systems. There is no withholding period for meat or eggs. We recommend first sanitising the hen house with Poultry Safeguard Concentrate or Smite Concentrate or Poultry Shield and when surfaces are dry apply the Appletons De-Mite Powder. Use hand application (wear a glove!) or our handy powder applicator and sprinkle/rub on perches and in nest box bedding. Apply to floor litter only if birds huddle/sleep on the floor at night. We recommend every 4 to 12 weeks. Please wear a nose and mouth protector when undertaking this job due to all the fine dander and dust particles which could carry all sorts of nasty bacteria or fungi. We use a wide-mouthed shovel brush, pan, paint scraper and big plastic bin to clean our houses. Remove the bulk of litter using the shovel and then sweep out the rest with a brush and pan and then using a scrapper remove any necessary stubborn bits. Sweep out. Mix up Poultry Safeguard Concentrate to the correct dilution (see instructions on the bottle) and spray onto dry timbers. For residual red mite control, we recommend using Appletons De-Mite Powder in your hen house on a regular basis. If your hen house smells bad and is attracting flies then something is not working. A chook house should have no odour and be a sweet-smelling home for your chooks. How to Clean an Omlet Chicken CoopEmpty the dropping tray out regularly (daily if you prefer or weekly) and replace with a thin layer of fresh wood shavings. Once a month we recommend cleaning roosting bars and droppings tray with cleaning out the nest box. Washing the plastic trays and bars is recommended. This is a good time to check for red mite and other creepy crawlies! For residual control dust roosting bars, perch rails and nest box bedding with Appletons De-Mite Powder. Every 3 to 6 months we recommend giving your eglu a thorough clean from top to toe. We use a water blaster for this set on a wide-angle nozzle.  Poultry Safeguard used at is maintenance dose works well. Please rinse well with potable water. Your Egu should look as good as new after its clean!

Reap the benefits of using untreated wood shavings. Also ideal for raising chicks and in nest boxes. We recommend the use of wood shavings in a deep litter bed system. Shavings are better than wood chip or sawdust as shavings offer nice curls of timber rather than dust or chips. Deep litter is a term used to describe the floor of a chook house where loose dry material (wood shavings) are used. If mixed with chicken manure and additional dry litter as required, deep litter will not need removing for 6 to 12 months. If looked after, deep litter has no smell and ends up as beautiful compost (with no added weeds!)
